It is the largest of the communities, the closest one to
Townsville, with its own grocery shop and resort accommodation on the
beach.
There
is a bar and a
restaurant, as well as picnic tables and barbeques in the beachfront
park.
The second one is Saunders
Beach,
still close enough that you can see Townsville's
Castle Hill in the distance. It is the second largest of the
communities. It has a grocery store, and accommodation in the eastern
end of the beach. In the western end is a free camping spot, with
picnic tables, nice but it does get crowded.
North of Saunders is Bluewater
- a small community near the highway. There is free camping near
Bluewater Creek - not on the beach. The beach of Bluewater is called Toolakea,
with only one street on the beach front, and a small parking bay with
picnic facilities. Still close enough to Townsville that you can see Magnetic
Island in the distance.
The next one north is Toomulla.
This is the smallest of the communities with only a few
streets and no shops. There is quite a large free camping spot, though
not on the
ocean front. There is a creek mouth great for fishing.
North of Toomulla is the turnoff to Balgal
Beach - the third
largest of the beach communites, with bars and restaurants, a
resort and other accommodation, as well as free
camping and picnic facilities. It is one of the nicest of
Townsville Northern Beaches.
North of Balgal is Rollingstone,
with a pub, general store, free camping and a swimming hole but no
beach access. This is the northernmost of the communities, 50km north
of Townsville and just south of Paluma
Range National Park.
