Ned Kelly Bushranger

Ned Kelly was the famous bushranger in Australia.

It's funny that bushrangers can be famous at all, but he was and still is a legend for Australians.

What he really did was robbing and murdering people but people who liked him were against the police that at the time were not always doing the right thing.

Ned Kelly was born in 1854 in Victoria to Irish parents. His father was a convict, and after having served his conviction from Ireland (for stealing two pigs), he kept stealing cattle in Australia.

He was imprisoned for that in Victoria, and died after having served his sentence, obviously leaving an impression on Ned. The Kelly family members also had to do with the police a lot, and not every time were they guilty.

As soon as Ned grew up he started having clashes with the police. The first was a robbery and an assault at the age of 14. He had also been selling stolen sheep, and after he got away a few times, one policeman started disliking him and keeping a close eye on his family.

He kept getting called in as a suspect after many robberies, but after identification problems was released every time - it could have been that the witnesses were too scared. He also served short sentences for different other small crimes. At the age of 16 he got three years for riding a stolen horse and while he was serving that his younger brothers were arrested too.

There are a lot of stories of different incidents in the following years, and who knows how many are true to every detail, but the Kelly family was agitated a lot. They constantly had to convince the police and so finally Ned went into hiding. He was followed by three others and the police, in two parties, went looking for them. The Kelly gang found the police camping in the bush, and in the following confrontations Ned shot three policemen.

The gang was wanted now and the Victorian parliament promised a reward and made it legal for anyone to shoot them. The gang continued living in the bush for about three years, robbing banks to survive. They did not harm the innocent and they did not touch women or children but they were vicious against the police.
