Hervey Bay is not a very touristy town except that it is the main
gateway to Fraser
Island.
But there are a few things to see and do in town. It
has got the 10km long Esplanade with a great walking/bicycle path along
the whole beach (walk it if you have time - it's great!). The Esplanade
is also the liveliest street with travellers, and this is where you
find many restaurants, shops, internet cafes, accomodation and other
things for travellers.

The Famous Landmark of Hervey Bay Australia
In the easternmost end of the esplanade is Hervey Bay's most famous
landmark - the Urangan Pier.
It is one of the longest piers in
Australia (longer than 1km), and has got a great deal of history. There
are even a few events devoted to the pier, such as the Pier Festival
and the Pier to Pub swim.

Things to Do in Hervey Bay Australia
Other things to see and do in town are Hervey bay
Natureworld (the usual arrangement of Australian native
and introduced fauna), Neptune's Reef World
(a pretty average aquarium by Australian standards), and Hervey
Bay Historical Museum.

Hervey Bay Whale watch
But the main thing Hervey Bay is famous for (apart from Fraser Island),
is, of course, whale
watching. The season is between August and late
October, and there are numerous companies that take you out to half day
or full day whale watching tours.
They include Hervey Bay Whale Watch,
Blue Dolphin Tours, Spirit of Hervey Bay, Whalesong, Shayla Cruises,
Freedom and Mikat. Outside the season, the companies typically do
dolphin
watching tours.

Here's a Hervey Bay map, where I have tagged the places that I
mentioned on this web page. You can click on the tags to see what
places they are, and double-click anywhere on the map to zoom it in and
see the places closer. Drag the map to move around, and if you want to
see the satellite image with Google Earth, click on "Sat" in the top
right hand corner.
