Heron Island is a great place to discover the coral reef ecosystem at
the Great Barrier Reef.
It's mostly national park, covered in pisonia trees and large flocks of
birds called black noddies.

The island is a real coral cay,
surrounded by some excellent coral
reef that is easy
to discover by snorkelling. The island is also known for some great
diving sites. There is a resort,
and a
research station.

You can reach it by catching a boat from Gladstone
on Capricorn
Coast.
It's not very close, it's about 70km boat ride, but it's a beautiful
ride with blue waters and possibilities to see whales,
dolphins,
marine turtles,
dugongs and other marine animals.
