However, as the reef is closer to the coast up north, the trips from
the coastal towns of north Queensland are better value as travelling
times are shorter and travelling costs are smaller.
The most popular
places for such trips are Cairns, Palm Cove and Port Douglas. But
Whitsundays, otherwise known for some excellent sailing and not always
so much for coral reef, also has some excellent trips to the outer
reef, where, in fact, the single most photographed reef on the GBR -
