Eureka Flag

So what is Eureka Flag all about?

You have probably seen it around in Australia, and wandered what is the meaning of that flag.

It is dark blue, much of the colour of the Scottish flag, but the cross is not diagonal, and the stars represent the Southern Cross - the star formation in our southern skies.

The story started in Victorian Goldfields in Ballarat.

The gold diggers felt the Government was too harsh on them, collecting fees to dig gold. They also wanted to vote for their government.

A large protest - the Eureka Rebellion - was held near Ballarat in 1854. About 30 people were killed, but the Government was later found at fault and things improved for the diggers.

The flag now is a symbol for protest and democracy.
