Collinsville is a
mining town in
outback Queensland.
It is inland from Bowen
on the
coast of north Queensland.
Between Townsville
and
the Burdekin
Region in the north, and
Mackay and the Whitsundays region in the south.
It is less than an hour's drive from the coast, through some outback
country.
The main reason the town exists is its coal
mine.
There some murals
illustrating
its history, ...
... and there is the Coal
Face Mining
Museum where you can find out more about the town's mining
past
and present. It's a good one if you are into mining.
There is also a mining
memorial,
and of course the two mines - Collinsville
Coal Mine, and Sonoma
Coal Mine.
On 13. October every year, a Miners'
Memorial Day
is held at the Museum, to remember the 26 men who have lost their lives
in the mines of Collinsville. The October 13th was the day for the
worst disaster of the town when seven men lost their lives in an
underground mine explosion.
Like elsewhere in countryside Australia, pubs are hotels where you can
stay. But for
an even better outback
experience,
I recommend Bowen
River Hotel.
