Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales often get weeks of temperatures close to 50ºC, which together with lack of rain and strong winds make it very easy for bushfires to start and spread.
It all is worsened by the fact that 70% of the trees in southern parts of Australia are eucalypts. Eucalypt trees have oil glands on their leaves, and that oil is very flammable.
