Birdsville Australia

Birdsville Australia is a remote outback town.

Birdsville is a tiny township in south-western Queensland, next to Simpson Desert and next to the border of South Australia.

It is in Diamantina Shire and was originally called Diamantina Crossing - a border town established in the late 1800s to collect interstate cattle droving tolls.

The town used to have three hotels, many other commercial buildings and a customs house, but since the tolls were abolished when Australia became a Federation in 1901, the population started decreasing and now only one pub remains. There is also a museum, a library and a hospital. The town also has the only power station in Australia that uses hot artesian water to produce geothermal energy.

The town is also known for the annual Birdsville Races, held during the first weekend in September every year - a great event that brings thousands of people to the tiny town.
