AVOID ACER LAPTOPS - ESPECAILLY THE ASPIRE 5517!!!
I am a 40+ year old man who owns a number of laptops.
Dell, Apple, HP, and ACER.
I've even owned some 'off brands' through the years and though each has their ups and downs, no one brand has ever failed me more than ACER!
First off, they only offer you 1 year of severely 'limited' customer service.
My laptop's keyboard and screen stopped functioning without cause after 9 months of ownership.
For the record, I don't transport my laptop often but when I do it's in a sturdy, padded, case and is always strapped in as well.
The first time I had an issue I spent 7 1/2 hours on the phone with all different people from ACER before they finally agreed to take the computer back and repair it.
I had to cover the shipping costs to their facility in Texas (about $30).
I received an Email that I'd be getting the computer back within 2 weeks without any further charges since the motherboard and keyboard were deemed 'defective'.
The computer has been trouble free since then (9 more months) until just recently while in use (literally reading Yahoo news) the laptop shut off for no reason (it was plugged in) and from that point on refused to power up.
There was no surge and even if so, the laptop's power block was plugged into a heavy-duty commercial surge protector, and no software has been installed or downloaded other than what is on the laptop since it was initially sent in. I've been very careful not to change ANYTHING since it was last serviced by ACER.
I called after digging around online to find an actual phone number that worked where I could speak with a human being.
I was transferred to two people after explaining all that happened.
I explained that I would gladly pay for the shipping to them once again and if they determined (and could prove) that the reason for the failure wasn't a defect, I'd pay whatever they wanted (within reason) to repair it, or they could give me the option to not have it repaired and shipped back to me.
I was put on hold while waiting for a supervisor, and then informed that there was nothing they could do, and I would have to pay for shipping of the laptop to and from Texas, AND pay at least $199.00 for any repairs with additional costs possible.
I couldn't believe that a less than 19 month old laptop could fail completely within such a time without a company as big as ACER willing to step up and at least TRY to do the right thing.
They wouldn't do anything.
I told them if this was ACER's position that I would share it online, dump the hard-drive from the laptop at a local PC repair facility ($20) and then buy a new computer NOT made by ACER as all other brands in this price range ($400) seem to stand behind their products a lot better.
I recall getting hit with a virus with my first DELL desktop (not their fault) which rendered my hard drive useless. They sent a tech to my home to replace it. For free. 2 years after I bought it...
ANYTHING BUT ACER!
CUSTOMER SERVICE IS WORTH MORE THAN THE MACHINE!!!
