Australian Citizenship

So what does Australian Citizenship mean?

As a permanent resident (which you need to be to be able to take the citizenship) you are allowed to live in Australia forever, so why would you take the citizenship?

As an Australian citizen, you can

* vote

* apply for jobs within the Government and Defence Force

* get an Australian passport

* receive help from an Australian Embassy while overseas

You also have some responsibilities, such as

* serve on a jury in a court case if asked to do so

* defend Australia in case of war

To be able to get Australian citizenship, you have to

* be over 18 years old (otherwise you get the citizenship of your parents)

* have lived in Australia as a permanent resident a certain time

* stayed in the country to a certain extent of time

* not be a criminal

* pass the Australian citizenship test
